Fashion and Fakes

30 Jun

This is probably quite a controversial topic especially for a blogger to write and I think that it is probably an area in which everyone has an opinion.  Before I start I just want to say that this post is only my thoughts/opinions/experience and that everyone is entitled to theirs and I’d love to know what you think so make sure to comment.

I’m going on holiday to Spain during the summer and for some reason I thought of the markets and the fake/replica bags that I’d seen there and I thought that it might make an interesting post.  There are so many opinions in this area and with a quick search of the internet you can find hundreds of sites that sell fake/replica bags and even sites which recommend which ones are best to shop at.

I found out that there was a study conducted by Professor David Walls entitiled ‘Jailhouse Frocks’ suggests that  fakes were actually not affecting the fashion market as much as was claimed.  It was argued that as not everyone would be able to afford to but one, and therefore the company wasn’t really going to be losing that money.  I have also seen internet post claiming that the fashion industry should not complain as the brand was effectively getting advertising as more people would be walking about with the bag.  I’m not sure I full agree with this – I feel that I can usually always spot a fake bag and I can understand why brands wouldn’t like this ‘free advertising’ as they may not want to be associated with the people that have a replica version of there product.

There was a lot of mixed opinion about the quality with some saying that the fakes/replicas were terrible quality and others saying that there were one that were really good.  I’d never bought any fake/replica products and felt that I couldn’t really give an honest thought without seeing any first (I’d always just walked by them at the markets).  So I bought one online – I bought a replica Mulberry Double Zip Bayswater; just because  know that I will be buying at least one real Mulberry as soon as can.  You can find the real Mulberry Double Zip Bayswater here.

So here it is…

Replica Mulberry

I bought this for about £23 and I like it.  I chose this one as I wanted it to look different from the real ones – the real ones don’t come in this colour, and the closest one to this has different hardware, the leather is also different and the one I have has no padlock.

Replica Mulberry

I posted a couple of pictures with me with it on Instagram (I didn’t use #mulberry or anything as I didn’t want to mislead people) but out of the people who had seen or liked the picture no one mentioned or asked if it was fake.  I mean I wasn’t expecting to be bombarded with comments but I though maybe someone might have noticed or perhaps someone did but just didn’t want to say.  I’m not the kind of person that would try and pretend that it’s real; if some was to ask I’d tell them that it was fake.

Replica Mulberry

I know that this bag is no where near the quality of Mulberry bags but I find that for a bag just to throw things in when your going somewhere it’s great; and you can fit so much in.  I have to admit when I bought it although it said it was leather I wasn’t actually expecting it to be.

If there is something that I really hate it’s when people sell fakes/replicas on places like Ebay and try to pass them off as genuine.  I think that this is really unfair on people buying the products believing that they’re real.  I can’t even imagine how I would feel if I’d spent a lot of money on a product that I believed was real only to find out if wasn’t.

There is so much more to say on this topic that I decided to try and condense it before the post got any longer than it was.  I know that there is so much that I haven’t commented on but I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the post.

TL;DR – There are so many opinions about fake goods; both for and against.  The fashion industry may not be losing as much money as they estimate.  Everyone has to make their own choices when it comes to this BUT don’t try and sell fakes pretending that they’re real!

I really want to know your thoughts on this so please leave your comments below! 🙂

Kate Moss For Topshop 2014

5 Jan

Kate Moss will be releasing a new line Spring/Summer collection with Topshop in April 2014.  It’s been over three years since Kate Moss last collaborated with Topshop and has previously had several sell out collaborations with the store.  This collection will be available globally in store and  through the Topshops website as well.

Kate Moss has been quoted saying “ I have really missed being involved in the design process, and working with the team at Topshop. I am very excited to create a new collection that bears my name. Now more than ever with London being at the forefront of fashion as it feels like I’m back home working with Topshop”.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what this collection will be like.  As it’s going to be a Spring/Summer collection I think that there will most likely be; floral, pastels, some sheer pieces and possibly a dropped waist dress?

If you want to keep up to date with the collections release then you can sign up to the Topshop Style Notes List on their website here.

Are you looking forward to the release of the new Kate Moss collection?  I’ll keep you updated as soon as I know more about the collection 🙂

Alexa Chung It Review

17 Dec

This is the first book review I’ve written, and I have read it.  I once did a talk in school on a book that I hadn’t read (Black Beauty) but I had seen the movie so managed to talk about it ok, got a good grade and somehow managed to answer the awkward questions aimed at me like “When in the book do you find out Black Beauty is a horse?” – Who asks a question like that?

I love reading, but I’m not a fan of dissecting books up like you do in English, talking about the use of similes ect.  So there was a lot of very mixed reviews of this book, it seemed to be a bit like marmite – either love it or hate.  But I bought it as a Christmas present to myself anyway.

I love the cover of this book it’s a gorgeous pale pink hardcover with a little picture in the center.  There is a lot of pictures in this book including drawings by Alexa.  There isn’t a huge amount of writing and therefore the there aren’t any chapters.  This doesn’t bother me but it appears to bother others from the review that I’ve seen.  Some argue that there isn’t a structure at all but I feel that there is, it’s almost like reading blog posts or a sort of diary.  I loved that about this about the book, I don’t think it would have suited being written any other way.

This reminded me a little of me

It could be read in an hour or two if you wanted but I decided not to read it like this.  I decided to read it over a couple of days just because I felt that it would probably be better enjoyed this way.  I just felt that because of the way it was written reading in an hour just wasn’t right.  I’m not trying to tell you how to read it, I just preferred to read it this way.

It also mentions some of her favourite style icons and beauty looks that she admires.  You also get to find out a little bit about her life through the years.  There is one thing that I really quite dislike and that is that there is no note under some of the pictures to tell you about who it is/when it was taken.  This doesn’t matter on some pages like when she’s talking about beauty looks like Twiggy and the picture is above what she’s talking about.

I would really recommend this book but I if your unsure whether you’d like it then maybe go in to a book shop and have a wee flick through it first. I’ve seen quite a few reviews refer to it as a great coffee table book; if that’s the kind of thing that you go for then this might be good.  I definitely thing that that this is the kind of book that you can go back and look at for inspiration.

Have you bought It? And what did you think?  Is there any books that you would recommend?

#SBBC Inspiration

15 Sep

I get inspiration for blog posts in a variety of places and always look at these when I’m struggling to come up with a new post idea.  Here are my favourite places to look for inspiration;

  • Magazines – I can’t imagine not buying magazines as I love magazines and during my spending ban I didn’t buy any and it’s definitely had an impact on the amount that I buy now.  Anyway two of my favourite magazines at the moment are Glamour and Company.   I feel that they provide so much inspiration, from picture ideas to articles.  It can help you find products to review that you maybe wouldn’t have thought of trying or writing a post based on an interesting article you read in it.
  • Other Blogs – I also find inspiration from other blogs, although if your going to take inspiration from other blogs make sure you don’t copy them and if you decided to write something that is very similar/based on something they wrote make sure you give them some credit 🙂  That’s how I came up with my Summer Essential series; as lots of bloggers were doing favourite posts but at the time none of the ones I was reading had focused solely on summer products so I decided to create a series of posts based on this.  Blogs also help provide fashion inspiration too, although I hate it when a product becomes really popular and every fashion blog has the same thing.  They also help you find new beauty products to try and review on you blog and most bloggers give their honest opinion so you have an idea of what the product is really like before you buy it.
  • Other people – I think you can find inspiration from other people, whether it be friends, family or just a random person in the street.  This is mainly for fashion, as sometimes you see someone in  an outfit with items that you maybe wouldn’t have thought about trying together.

So that’s the three main places that I find inspiration for writing for my blog; where do you find inspiration for blog writing?

Fashion Week Post Help :)

27 Feb

So I was emailed recently asking if I wanted to write articles for a website The Days Web which is relaunching on the 4th of March, which I said I would love to do 🙂

Anyway I’m looking for some help, I’m writing an article on Fashion Weeks and what people really think of them for example,

  • Do blog readers enjoy fashion week posts or would they rather see what their favourite bloggers are wearing?
  • Do people follow what’s happening in fashion or follow blogs for inspiration or have their own unique style?
  • And are Fashion Weeks losing their exclusivity due to being so easily accessible?

I’m also planning on posting the article on my blog as well as having it put on The Days Web site.  If you want to help I would love it if you could leave a comment or email me at sheslookingatthestars@gmail.com.  If you have a blog I will include a link to this in the article and blog post, you can also remain anonymous if you wish 🙂

Really looking forward to hearing what you have to say! And thanks in advance 🙂

Boux Avenue’s Valentine’s Day Blogger Challenge

9 Feb

Boux Avenue have decided to hold a blogger challenge where bloggers create a Valentine’s Day gift using there products. As a huge lover of lingerie and Boux Avenue I knew that I wanted to take part.

A little bit about the company: Boux Avenue is a UK based lingerie brand which opened its first stores in 2011.  They now have stores across the country and are also available online.  They have a wide range of sizes and styles so there is really something for everyone.  Boux Avenue also have a Boux Avenue VIP card where you can collect points on purchases made and then spend the points on future purchases.

These are the items that I chose:

PicMonkey Collage

The first is the Alexus silk balconette bra.  I think that this scarlet red is the perfect colour for Valentine’s Day and the black lace makes it look sexy without look over the top/tacky.  A balconette bra is also great for enhancing the shape/giving up lift to breasts. The Alexus bra is available in sizes from 30C to a 38F and costs £30.

There is also matching a matching silk thong which is cost £14 and matching silk shorts which cost £16.  Both of these are available in sizes 8-16.

To really dress this lingerie look up you could add a pair of glossy lace top hold ups, which come in sizes small-large and are priced at £10.

I also added this cute heart keyring as I feel that it makes a cute little addition to the gifts that I’ve chosen.  This keyring is avaliable in two colours and is priced at £6.50.

I hope that you like the gift idea that I’ve created, feel free to let me know what you think 🙂

Barratts Wellies Review*

29 Jan

The lovely people at Barratts chose me to review a pair of the wellies.  Living in Scotland wellies are really useful during the winter as there tends to be a lot of rain and snow.  I chose the Envy ankle wellies as I thought they looked really cute.  The wellies I chose are red with a black bow but also come in pink with a black bow.  These are an online exclusive and you don’t have to worry about waiting too long for your order to come, I ordered mine on a Tuesday afternoon and received them on the Friday.

These wellies are really comfortable even when walking for a long period of time.  I think that ankle wellies are perfect for going into town during the day in the bad weather as there usually isn’t as much snow in town/city centers and I definitely intend to wear mine to uni when the weather is bad. There also great for taking your dog walk 🙂

Overall I would highly recommend these wellies and ordering online from Barratts.  You can see the full range of Barratts wellies by clicking here.

3) Nude coloured flats with studs, I think these would look great with skinny jeans £20

2) I love these lotus boots! There just so unusual as they lace up at the side £54

3) These shoes boots look really cute! £40.50

Party Shoes

1)  These jeweled wedge heels would make the perfect addition to any party outfit £35

Next Christmas Preview

15 Oct

Last week I attended the Next Christmas preview at the Blythswood Square Hotel in Glasgow.  The event was held in the penthouse suite which was gorgeous and amazing views. The preview showed clothes, beauty and home-ware.

For ladies-wear there was a few pieces of bold geometric prints,

This dress was one of my favorites there, I loved the jewel detailing on it.

This jacket had the same print as the dress.

Some lovely white tops,

I think I’ll have to buy this coat at some point,

And some more dresses,

I really wish I had taken more pictures of this dress to show how many sequins were on it.

I think these slipper boots look super cute!

And now for the Christmas homewear;

Next also has a range of beauty products named after cities which come in lovely packaging making them great for gifts,

And last but not least, some of the items from menswear,

Classic Christmas jumper

I had such a great time at the Next Christmas preview and  I really hope they hold something like this in Scotland again 🙂
